Wild Wild West Report No 2

Last Friday (9th September) Helen and I put on our square dance clobber and headed off to the Happy Wanderers Square Dance Club in Perth’s Eastern suburb of Eden Hill.  Whilst at the Darwin convention, we had forewarned Kevin Kelly the club caller that we would drop in to see him when in Perth, unfortunately we could not make it last Friday because Helen was sick.  Guess what – bloody square dance callers – Kevin was in Tassie, (also last Friday) and will not be back until next Friday when we will have departed Perth (isn’t romance a wonderful distraction).  We must remember to have another shower (we’ve already had our annual one), the word has obviously got around, this is the second club we have visited in WA where the caller has been absent.

No great loss though, we had a most enjoyable night, because the club has another three callers who can stand in whilst Kevin is absent (sorry Kevin mate, face facts, there are people ready to replace you and if you don’t use it you lose it).  John Riach did most of the calling for the night and was very good, Toney Gray also gave us a couple of good calls and Corrine Bradshaw cued some round dancing.

Happy wanderers dance hall is just the right size, it could accommodate 8 squares, has a good timber floor, a stage and excellent kitchen facilities.  Like many clubs in WA, Happy Wanderers does not have a large membership, but as mentioned previously when at Friendly Squares, quality beats quantity every time.  We had two squares up all night with about one square sitting out chin wagging.  We only time we broke down was when Tony called Allemande Thar, Box the Gnat , Grand Right and Left to the beat of the music, (about 126) one beat for each call.

I thought John was Welsh but no, he turned out to be a Jordie from Whitly Bay about 15 kilometres NW of Newcastle Upon Tyne, that’s nowhere near Wales, its on the other side of the island, perhaps he suffers Aussie-accent-blur or (more likely) I am just no good at picking accents.

We had a lovely time, the club has a most friendly atmosphere, thank you, it’s a pity we can’t go back.  I did invite everyone to come to Wild Frontier if they ever come to Adelaide.  We do plan to visit another WA club on Tuesday (I wonder if their caller will be at home?).
