Tea Tree Gully Square Dancers

I was lucky enough to attend a square dance on Thursday afternoon 2nd August.  We had two squares doing a demo dance and 5 squares up for a few calls.  What was significant about this? The dancers were from Tea Tree Gully Primary School, Grades 4, 5 & 6 between 8 and 10 years of age!

Graham Helen & I attended along with Jeff our caller to help the children with a set dance “The Grand Colonel Spin”.  They did not need any help, Jo Taylor their teacher has done such a great job showing them the moves; they squared up and did the dance wonderfully (a lot better than some of our club dancers).  So I scrounged a few photos from the school camera (sorry about the quality, it seems the education department does not splash out too much cash, next time I will take my own).

They have learned a couple of dances for our Charity Night function with the Police Dixie Band, in aid of Childhood Cancer to be held on Saturday 25th July at the Burnside Community Centre (7.00 PM start).  At these events club dancers usually get up and do a square dance demonstration.  I felt it would be better if some cancer kids did the dance (who wants to watch a load of old “fuddy duddies” doing a dance – we need more fun).  Unfortunately this was not possible and thankfully Tea Tree Gully Primary School came to our rescue.

It appears that the children have enjoyed learning to square dance, judging from the thankyou card the demonstration dancers produced for Jo.  There should be more of this in different schools then they could all get together for an inter school square dance eisteddfod.

If you can’t see the words on the card it reads: “To Dear Jo!   Thank you soooooo much for teaching us all square dancing for this year!  We will all put in our best effort for the fundraiser you’re a great teacher for square dancing, we love you (as a teacher) you’re the coolest square dancing teacher thank you again we really appreciate it lots of love the square dancers” with 18 signatures below.

Whilst we were not really needed on Thursday we did join in and had a great time.  We all really enjoyed the afternoon.  Fantastic effort Tea Tree Gully you are up there with the best!  Thank you very much for your enthusiastic effort.  Hopefully we will be able to come along and dance with you all again, perhaps you will be able to bring your parents, brothers and sisters and we can all have some fun
