This year we are drawing attention to the health and fitness benefits of square dancing and as a precursor to our learners class proper are offering two free come and try events (as detailed below) so you can see if square dancing is your cup of tea or not.  You can come to one or both of the free nights which will have similar content.

Our poster states Yes We Mean You; and we certainly do.  What do they do at a square dance?  This come and try event is for anyone who wants to know more about square dancing, or are unsure if it is their sort of pastime.  Anyone can attend, bring your whole family.

Generally children above the age of 8 can participate; all they need to do is listen to what Jeff our caller tells them to do.  Children below this age can sometimes have a go; it all depends on their concentration span.

This come and try event will be held as a precursor to our new 2010 learners classes which will commence on Thursday 27^th May 7.30 at our learners venue in the hall next to Kensington Gardens Uniting Church, Brigalow Avenue, Kensington Gardens

If you can’t come to the Sunday event, then come along on Thursday 13^th or Thursday 20^th May at 7.30 PM to our Brigalow avenue venue for a free introductory dance.  There will not be a BBQ , but we will supply some tea coffee cordial and perhaps a sandwich or two for supper.  If you like you can come to both nights absolutely free of charge.

Non dancers are welcome. They can come free of charge on the condition they each purchase $2.00 worth of raffle tickets, this will assist with our catering costs which are in addition to food brought along for the basket supper.

Furthermore we are planning a come and try on the following Sunday afternoon (21^st March) with a BBQ for family, friends, couples, singles – anyone who would like to try out some simple introductory square dance movements to see if they would like to join our new learners class starting on 13^th May at Kensington Gardens.

If in the past you approached Kensington Park Uniting Church hall from the west the city), just keep driving past, cross over the traffic lights at Glynburn Road, and through the pedestrian crossing lights.  Brigalow avenue is the last turning on the left before the roundabout, if you reach the roundabout, go round it back the way you came from then take the first on the right.  Go along Brigalow avenue, through the cross road and you will locate the hall on the West  (left hand side) about 3/4 the way between Kensington Road and the Parade .  Park in the netball courts in front of the hall (door entry is on the south end of the hall.

The hall has a nice floor with a separate break out supper room adjacent to the kitchen.  It is smaller than our old hall but will comfortably hold 4 or 5 squares (we could squeeze in 6), considering our learners classes have maxed out at 4 squares, this is a great place for learning.

On Thursday evenings 9^th and 16^th July we have a free come and try as a lead in to learning all the moves.  Absolutely zero dancing experience and no confidence is almost essential.  So come along and see if you like square dancing.  Sorry there is no BBQ, but we will throw in some light supper.

This is for a first time try out, or a re acquaintance with the past. Absolutely no experience is necessary.  Some experienced dancers will be there to assist you.  Dancing / instruction will be between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM there will be regular breaks – iced cordial and water will be supplied.  The BBQ (sausages, patties and salads) will be served between 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM with coffee and tea.  We will try to cater for any reasonable special dietary needs if you have them.  We will post out the tickets for bookings up to Monday 16th March after that you will need to collect your ticket at the door.  If booked on or before Friday 13th March a cheque would be appreciated, or you can pay at the door

SQUARE DANCING ?

This is not really “dancing” (as with fancy steps) its good healthy cardio-vascular exercise; great fun and a good tonic for you your family and friends.  Suitable for anyone prepared to listen to the caller’s instructions and walk at a brisk pace (if in doubt, check with your doctor).  We have found that children generally need to be 8 or more years of age, because they need sufficient concentration to listen to and follow the caller’s instructions.

The Wild Frontier Square Dance Club Inc was formed in 1973 by our square dance caller Jeff Seidel.  Since that time learner’s classes and weekly square dances have been regularly held in the same hall, located behind the Uniting Church, 286 Kensington Road (opposite the Chelsea Cinema).  Jeff still remains our resident caller and it is fair to say that he is one of the leading callers in Australia.
